African Bush Elephant

The African Bush Elephant is largest animal on land, with some weighing in at more than 6 tons. Elephants are thought to have been named for the Greek word for ivory, elefantodonto. Their long, ivory tusks have also led to the slow decline in their population, as they are hunted and killed solely for the ivory. Their ivory tusks can be 2.5 meters long and weigh 50 to 100 kg. Males can be up to 3.5 meters long in height, and females can be 3 meters tall. They can grow to have a length of 6 to 7 meters long. They have 4 molar teeth, each about 12 inches long and weighing about 5 kilograms each. As the front pair of molars wears down and breaks off into pieces, the back molars push forward and new molars grow in behind those. In a lifetime, elephants will replace their teeth 6 times. Despite their immense size, elephants are herbivores- they feed strictly on leaves branches, vegetables, fruits, and roots. A grown adult can drink up to 50 gallons of water in a single day!
